Whenever he gets money, he likes to spend it on what looks like the fastest and fanciest racing bikes, regardless of their quality. Sometimes his purchases work out….and sometimes they don’t. Ricky always tries again but he’s tired of not seeing a return of his money. To make sure Ricky chooses his next bike wisely, his big sister is going to help him do some research on the ones that catch his eye so he can make a wiser and better decision.
SOFIE SPENDER
Your child’s secondary Money Personality is Spender! Spenders are carefree with their money. They aren’t concerned about how much money they spend or who they spend it on. They love to take care of people! You may notice your child when there is candy involved. They jump right in, not thinking twice to save some for later. This is their Spender side taking charge!
Sofie is an aspiring dancer. Ever since she was little, she has dreamt of going to The Juilliard School for dance.
Sofie struggles to save for her dream school because she has SO many wants. She sees new dance shoes in a window and has a deep need to go buy them as fast as she can. There isn’t anything wrong with Sofie – that’s just part of who she is! It does make it hard for her to achieve her future goals, but don’t worry!
Sofie’s mom is helping her to make a piggy bank that Sofie can put some of her allowance into each week. Through careful planning and encouragement from her friends, Sofie will eventually be able to achieve her goals.

A Friendship is born…
Ricky is a daredevil at heart! His risk-taking nature is seen when he tries out new stunts on his bike, and jumps head first into money decisions without paying any mind to the end result. Last week, Ricky saw a blue bike with a for sale sign on the side of the road. It had some sweet racing stripes on the side, and since the bike was a really low price, he bought it without thinking about it. His plan was to fix it and sell it to earn more money, but later, he found out it was missing some really important parts. Ricky’s friend, Sofie Spender, has similar spending habits to him. Sofie is a spender at heart! She will buy most anything she sees that interests her. The two friends decide to get together once a week and make a plan for their purchases before they spend all the money in their savings. Ricky and Sofie learn from each other and are able to save their money by being accountability partners to each other.
Help grow your child’s financial brain
- 1Sit down with your child and talk to them about wants and needs. Explain that needs are the priority and their wants can be saved for!
- 2Give your kids an allowance of some sort! It will help them grasp how to save, spend, and share their money.
- 3Allow them freedom with their money, but do give them some tips. We want to let them have their own money personality and not feel bad about it, but learning aspects of other types will help later on in life.
